Mangalore, Jan 22: As part of Karavali Utsav 2012-13, a three-day Panambur Beach Festival will be underway from January 25 at Panambur Beach situated on the outskirts of the city.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, Assistant Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada Dr Venkatesh M V said that the Utsav would include a food festival and a variety of competitions and programmes spread over the three days.
The festival will be inaugurated on Friday at 4 p.m. followed by cultural programmes. Competitions such as dancing, singing, skating for school children, boating, swimming and sand-art and sculpture competitions will be held over three days. A new concept this year is the ‘Beach Baby’ competition held for children aged 3 to 5 years to be held on Saturday, January 26. There will also be splendid kite-flying displays by ‘Team Mangalore’ on all the three days.
The famed Indian rock-music band ‘Euphoria’ will perform on Sunday after the valedictory ceremony at 6 p.m. Various food stalls offering North Indian and local Mangalorean dishes will be set up at the beach as part of the food festival, he said, adding that a budget of Rs 20 lakh had been allotted for the entire Utsav.
Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project CEO Yathish Baikampady said that a large number of people were expected to take part in the beach utsav.
All buses heading to Panambur Beach will ply till the entrance of the beach during the entire beach utsav, for the convenience of the people. Around 20 police and security personnel will be deployed to guide people and ease the traffic during the festival, he said, adding that no vehicles would be allowed to traverse the interior Panambur road from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, due to the large number of expected visitors.
As safety measures, along with the existing 12 lifeguards at Panambur Beach, an additional 20 will be positioned for the duration of the festival, he said.
