Mangalore Police catch thief within hour of theft, recovers Rs 5,10 lakh

Mangalore : The Pandeshwar Police successfully nabbed a thief within one hour after he managed to snatch packet containing Rs 5.10 Lakh from a Tamil Nadu based sweets and condiments businessman near Mangalore Central Railway Station on Friday, December 6.

The accused has been identified as Omkar Shetty (30), resident of Savanur Taluk in Haveri District.

In Mangalore Omkar used to sleep in Nehru Maidan or footpath and was employed at a juice shop locate opposite Lady Goschen Hospital.

Ayampady who was a resident of Payyangady in Kannur, Kerala used to visit Mangalore regularly. On Friday at 8.30 a.m Ayampady who had arrived from Kerala train was walking in Hampankatta along with his brother when Omkar snatched away the bag from his hand.  As soon as the incident occurred Ayampady went to Pandeshwar Police Station and registered a complaint. The Police started their pursuit along with Ayampady in their PCR vehicle. The Police who suspected that this could be a handiwork of a person staying near Nehru Maidan or nearby places started searching near Nehru Maidan.

Finally they found Omkar walking suspiciously on AB Shetty circle to Clock Tower road, upon questioning he admitted to the crime.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Mangalore South Sub Division SP, Pavan Nejoor by Dinakar Shetty, inspector, Pandeshwar Police Station and Shivarudrappa S Meti, PSI, Crime Division and other personnel.
